Pteranodon (Papo)

Filed under: Papo, non-dinosaur, pterosaur — plesiosauria @ 12:05 pm

The flying reptiles (not dinosaurs) make great additions to any collection, not least because you can hang them up! This Pteranodon by Papo has the added bonus that its clawed feet act as a grip so it can be hung upsidedown. It is a very dynamic looking model in mid-flight. It looks like it is based on the pterosaurs in Jurassic Park 3; by the shape of the crest, the species is Pteranodon longiceps. Another species of Pteranodon with a distinctly shaped crest is sometimes available as a toy (P. sternbergi).

A more detailed review of this figure can be found here: http://dinosaurcollector.wordpress.com/2008/07/05/pteranodon-papo-2/

  1. You forgot to mention the biggest flaw of this toy, it has teeth! No Pteranodon had any teeth whatsoever.

  2. Good point – that must be another hangover from the Jurassic Park models that the papo toys are clearly based upon.

  3. They should stop now and stop making these dinosaurs. While their texturing and color is impossibly nice, the dinosaurs themselves are even more inaccurate than those of Jurassic Park, as these seem to exaggerate JP’s inaccuracies. The teeth on this Pteranodon are simply…unforgivable.

Their lack of originality and critical thinking has led them into the stupidest mistake one can make regarding dinosaur and other prehistoric beast modeling in the last 10 years.

  4. Ooh controversial! :)
I’m actually split on this particular line, as I have said in other posts (Velociraptor by Papo), I tend to regard these as ‘retro’ models, the mistakes are part of their charm, although I know that is not what they are intended to be. On the other hand, for most (all) of the dinosaur toy collectors in the online community I am a part of (see links below), this toy line represents the elite in dinosaur figures. This is due to the fine detail and sculpting, but also specifically because, in the case of the Velociraptor, it does NOT have feathers. I’m happy to hear someone with a different point of view. I have to admit, the fact that these have obviously beed plagiarised directly from Jurassic Park also bugs me.
